Frequently asked questions.

What is pelvic health physical therapy?

Pelvic health physical therapy focuses on the muscles, joints, nerves, organs, and connective tissues of the pelvis. It addresses concerns such as pelvic pain, bladder and bowel changes, sexual pain, pregnancy and postpartum recovery, core weakness, and more. Treatment blends movement, nervous system regulation, and education.

Who do you work with?

I serve women, men, and gender-expansive individuals ages 16 and up. My clinical approach is inclusive, trauma-informed, and tailored to each person’s history, goals, and lived experience.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. Roots & Rivers is a virtual pelvic health practice. All sessions are held online through secure video so you can receive care from the comfort of your home, with privacy, convenience, and consistency.

Is virtual pelvic physical therapy effective?

Absolutely. Research continues to show the effectiveness of telehealth for pelvic health concerns especially when it comes to education, behavior change, exercise planning, nervous system work, and self-guided techniques. You’ll receive step-by-step coaching, personalized treatment plans, and real-time support.

What conditions do you treat?

Common reasons people seek care include urinary incontinence, nocturia, urinary urgency/frequency, constipation, fecal incontinence, incomplete bowel evacuation, pain with intercourse, painful periods, and pelvic pain. If you’re unsure whether your concern fits, you can always reach out.

What actually happens during a session?

Sessions include conversation, movement assessment, education, guided exercises, nervous system strategies, and personalized care for your specific goals. If internal pelvic floor assessment is appropriate, you’ll receive clear guidance for self-assessment or self-palpation techniques that feel safe and empowered.

Do you perform internal exams?

Because Roots & Rivers is virtual, traditional in-person internal exams are not done. Instead, we use a combination of visual assessment, guided self-assessment (if appropriate), symptom mapping, functional movement evaluation, and your lived experience to create a targeted plan.

How long are sessions?

Initial evaluations are typically 60 minutes. Follow-up sessions are 45–60 minutes depending on your plan of care.

Do I need a referral?

Most clients do not need a referral to begin physical therapy services. However, some states or insurance carriers may require one for reimbursement. If you’re unsure, I can help you navigate that.

Do you take insurance?

Roots & Rivers operates as an out-of-network practice. You’ll receive a superbill to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. This model allows for individualized, high-quality, one-on-one care without rushed visits or limitations.

How many sessions will I need?

Treatment length varies depending on your goals, symptoms, and history. Many clients notice meaningful changes within 4–6 sessions, while others benefit from ongoing care and support. Your plan will always be collaborative and patient-led.

Can I work with you during pregnancy?

Yes. Prenatal pelvic PT is one of the most powerful ways to reduce discomfort, strengthen safely, prepare for birth, and support nervous system regulation during pregnancy.

What about postpartum care?

Postpartum recovery deserves more than “6-week clearance.” I provide support for healing, reconnecting with your core and pelvic floor, managing symptoms, and rebuilding strength at your pace.

What if I feel nervous, embarrassed, or unsure?

Pelvic health concerns are intimate, and it’s normal to feel hesitant. You’ll always be met with compassion, privacy, clear explanations, and a judgment-free environment. Your comfort matters and your autonomy leads the process.
